Glen Mills is commuter country with a highway running through the middle of it. Baltimore Pike carries the through traffic and the retail, the housing spreads out behind on curving township roads and into developments where every house has a driveway and most have a garage, and almost nobody walks anywhere. The cars are newer than average, which matters more than it used to: a windshield on a recent crossover is not just a piece of glass, it is the mounting for a camera the car uses to see lane markings and the vehicle ahead.
So the two things worth saying up front are about the camera and about the driveway. If your car has forward-facing driver assistance, the replacement glass has to be the right specification and the camera has to be recalibrated after fitting, and that should be discussed on the phone rather than sprung on you at the end. And because the housing here is driveways rather than curbs, mobile work fits well: the van pulls in beside the car, fits the glass, and the vehicle sits where it is through the cure instead of you making a thirty-minute run twice. Baltimore Pike, Route 1, is the dominant road, a fast divided highway through the township with shopping centers, medical offices and turning traffic hanging off it and a big interchange where Route 202 comes in from the south. Route 352 runs north-south through the older village ground and connects the townships either side. Concord Road and the smaller township roads take the local traffic on two lanes with gravel shoulders, blind crests and stone walls close to the edge. The residential developments off them are wide, quiet and well surfaced, which is why so little damage here happens where people actually live; it happens on the four miles between the driveway and the highway.
First, Route 1 at speed. Divided highway traffic at fifty-five with construction and delivery vehicles in the mix throws stone hard, and a chip collected here arrives with real energy behind it rather than as a soft mark. Second, the township roads. Gravel shoulders, unpaved drive entrances and the material tracked out of construction sites all end up on two-lane blacktop where the car in front picks it up and passes it back. Third, the tree canopy over the older roads, which drops limbs and ice onto anything parked beneath. Fourth, the winter treatment on Route 1, which contaminates any chip that has not been filled and makes a clean repair less likely the longer it waits.
Route 202 south from the Route 1 interchange is the cleanest run: follow it down through Chadds Ford, over the state line and into Wilmington on the Concord Pike corridor, then take Concord Avenue east to Market Street and turn north, staying on Market past 30th Street to 3520. Roughly half an hour. The alternative when 202 is heavy is Route 1 east to I-95 south, which is longer in miles and sometimes shorter in time. Call ahead with the year, make and model so the glass is ordered before you set off. Otherwise book the van and it comes to the driveway.
