Route 1, the Baltimore Pike, carries the fast east-west traffic across the top of the area with commercial frontage and turning traffic all along it. Route 202 runs south from that junction toward Delaware and is the road most people take to reach Wilmington. Route 100, Creek Road, follows the Brandywine north through the valley on a narrow, twisting alignment with the water on one side and rock and trees on the other. Off those, the township roads are two-lane, hilly, edged with stone walls, gravel drives and mature trees that meet overhead. Driveways are long and often unpaved, and they open onto roads where sightlines are short and traffic is faster than it looks.
First, gravel. Unpaved drives and gravel road shoulders put loose stone exactly where tires can throw it, and the car following on a narrow lane takes it in the windshield. This is the single biggest chip source in the township and it happens within a mile of home. Second, Route 1 and Route 202 at speed, where commercial traffic and worn lane edges do the highway version of the same thing. Third, the tree canopy. Limbs, ice and falling nuts onto a car parked outside under mature growth, plus sap that bakes onto glass and gets scraped at. Fourth, deer. On the valley roads at dusk an animal over the hood takes the windshield with it more often than people expect.
Route 202 south is the direct line: follow it down over the state line and into Wilmington, where it becomes the Concord Pike corridor. Where the Pike drops toward the Brandywine, take Concord Avenue east to Market Street, turn north, and stay on Market through Brandywine Village and past 30th Street to 3520. Half an hour on a normal run, longer when Route 1 is queueing at the 202 junction. Call ahead with the year, make and model so the glass is here before you are. Urethane cures by reacting with moisture in the air, so cold and very dry conditions slow it down and stretch the safe drive-away time considerably; heavy rain or snow landing on the bond line is a straight no.
