About an hour of fitting and $200 to $500 is what a broken door, quarter or back window comes to on most cars, once the correct pane is in hand. Two things get wrecked in a smash-and-grab and only one of them is obvious. The pane is the visible loss. The hidden one is the mechanism, because tempered glass collapses into blunt granules that pour down the inside of the door and pack around the lifting arms, the cable drum and the rubber channel the glass slides in. A window motor is strong enough to keep working with grit in that channel, which is precisely the trouble: it chews its way through over the following weeks and then jams with the glass halfway down. Anyone who has had a cheap replacement and lost a regulator six months later has already met this.
The fix is to open the door up rather than reach in through the top of it. Card off, cavity emptied, drain holes at the bottom cleared so water still has somewhere to go, lift arms and channels checked, then the new pane set and aligned so it beds properly into the seal at the top of its travel. The pane itself has to be right too: curvature and tint matched, a back glass reconnected to its heating element and aerial, and the plastic vapour barrier behind the card resealed rather than pressed back on. The cabin gets gone through at the same time, including the seat runners and the vents, which are the places granules hide longest.

If it happened in one of the lots at the corner, there are a few useful minutes before you drive anywhere. Photograph the car before you move anything, in case you claim. Sweep the granules into a bag rather than pushing them across the lot, where they go under other cars' tyres and into the storm drain. Cover the opening with sheeting taped inside and out and put something over the seat, then keep off the highway on the way in, because taped plastic that behaves at thirty tears at seventy. Kirkwood Highway east and down into the city is the sensible route, and it is around fifteen minutes to the bay.
